George has led University-wide international programs at NC State since 2002. Prior to this, he was Coordinator of International Programs for the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences.

In 1993 he was a leader of the U.S. Department of Agriculture Bulgarian-American Extension Project in Bulgaria.
His primary professional affiliation is with the American Society for Horticultural Science (ASHS). George is a Fellow of the Society and recent past-president. In 1990, he was selected as the first ASHS/AAAS Congressional Science Fellow, in which capacity he served as Science Advisor to Senator Terry Sanford of North Carolina.
George received his B.S. in Pomology from Cornell University in 1961, followed by his M.S. in Horticultural Science from Washington State University in 1963, and his Ph.D. in Postharvest Horticultural Science from Michigan State University in 1969.
